Turkey Burger with Apple & Cheddar

May is grilling month at EIEO- Time to fire up the barbie!

I finally believe that summer is coming. The sun is shining and the the birds are singing, it’s time to break out the barbecue for a long season of glorious grilling! Here is one of my favorite recipes that we first featured in the Summer 2012 issue. Easy, healthy and delicious… enjoy!

Turkey Burger with Apple & Cheddar

Serves: 4
Ingredients
  • PATTY
  • 1lb (454 g) ground turkey
  • 1 lightly beaten egg
  • 1/4 cup dry bread crumbs
  • 8 dashes Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 scallions, chopped
  • 1/4 cup parsley, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp poultry seasoning
  • 1 tsp sea salt (or to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper (or to taste)
  • TOPPING:
  • granny smith apple slices
  • old cheddar cheese slices
  • 1/4 cup whole-berry cranberry sauce mixed with 2 Tbsp grainy mustard
  • red leaf lettuce
Instructions
  1. Mix and form patties lightly, be careful not to overwork the meat. Press the centre of each patty to make a shallow ‘dent’ with your thumb. This keeps it from puffing during cooking.
  2. Rub grill with oil before cooking to prevent sticking.Grill on barbecue preheated to 400°F (200°C) with lid closed.
  3. Don’t press on the patty as it cooks, you’ll lose all the juices.
  4. Always use a digital-read thermometer to tell when burgers are ready. Turkey or chicken is done at 165ºF (74°C).
  5. Serve with toppings on a crusty bun.
