The Distillery District in Toronto is a perfect place for summer night out

Finally getting around to telling you all about the wonderful birthday dinner I had on July 1st. As it’s Canada Day, I always have trouble finding restaurants that are open. We decided to try one of the designated ‘tourist areas’ in Toronto, the historic Distillery District, and they were open for business!

This vibrant and distinctive district, once owned by Gooderham and Worts Distillers, has been transformed over the last 10 years from a derelict collections of Victorian industrial buildings to something exciting and unique. It’s a fusion of old and new. An internationally acclaimed village of one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants brimming with creativity. Clearly a magical place!

Tappo_Disstil5 Tappo_Front1 Tappo_Distil_3 The one dining spot in the area we had not tried, Tappo Wine Bar and Restaurant, is classic Italian/Mediterranean fare. They have a wonderful outdoor patio, right in the centre of prime ‘people-watching’, but I had my mind set on a cozy and intimate dinner for two, so inside we go. Not to disappoint  – the room has drama! Exposed rough brick walls and soaring industrial ceiling, amid gothic pillars and dazzling chandeliers. I love the mirrored bar reflecting the majesty of the room and making it feel open and twice as large – very glam.

Tappo_Inside1 Executive chef, Marco Spalvieri trained at Centro and comes most recently from an acclaimed stay at Casino Rama. We started off with ‘Crochette Di Caprino Con Gamberetti $15′ an orgasmic blend of fire roasted shrimp, warm panko crusted goat cheese and grilled tomato. Topped off with a drizzle of basil infused olive oil and aged balsamic, I’m in heaven. My husband had the meatballs what were were a mixture of basil and rice amid a delightful fresh tomato sauce. The second coarse of “Penne Alla Vodka $18’ and “Gnocchi Al Ragu D’Agnello $26, were both outstanding. Tender potato bundles tossed on braised lamb ragu… what’s not to like!

Tappo_App1 Tappo_App2 We are much too full for dessert, but glancing at the other tables they look amazing. Traditional Italian – semi-freddo, panettone and ice cream.

The service was professional and timing was perfect. The wine selection is extensive and well priced. I would highly recommend Tappo. I can imagine it in the winter being a warm, enveloping and romantic cocoon. A wonderful place to linger.

Appetizers – $10 – $18.00

Mains – $17 – $40.00

Reservations are recommended; call (647) 430-1111. Tappo Wine Bar and Restaurant  55 Mill St., Building #3, Distillery District.
