Perfectly romantic anniversary night at Araxi
I can still remember the first time I saw him. It was my first day at a new job, my boss was taking me around the office to introduce all my co-workers. We went from cubicle to cubicle, shaking hands and smiling, faces and names I would never remember in an hour. Then it was time to meet one of the staff Writers, there was something different about this one, he looked at me and that little voice in my head said ‘ohhhh’ and I felt a sudden spark.
Oh well, move on, more new people, then back to my desk to get down to work. Within minutes I felt a tap on my shoulder, it was ‘spark guy’ asking me to lunch… the rest is history. I’m so lucky that I found my soul mate that day, that someone who complements me perfectly making my life content.
Well back to the now, it’s time to celebrate another anniversary. In late September we traveled to beautiful British Columbia and the amazing mountain resort of Whistler. Whistler is a wonderful place, best known perhaps as the host for many events during the 2010 Winter Olympics. The scenery is breathtaking, rocky mountain vistas and crystal clear lakes surrounding a bustling nordic-style village with great shopping and dining.
The culinary cornerstone in the heart of Whistler Village, Araxi enjoys a long-held international reputation for excellence in food, wine and hospitality. Executive Chef, James Walt, has a reputation for celebrating local ingredients and growers. His seasonally rotating menus also feature the freshest seafood catches direct from the Pacific Ocean.
The dining room is wonderfully romantic, with fresh flowers, dim lighting and original works of art. The vibe is lively, but not to loud to have an intimate conversation.
We started off with a wonderful bottle of wine, from the nearby Okanagan Valley and some small plates. The Assorted Local Beet Salad with Vancouver Island buffalo mozzarella and beef juniper vinaigrette was an amazing fresh flavor combination. The soup of the evening, Tomato, was a true work of art – delicious!
Next, the Pork Selection main plate was a real show-stopper. A trio of belly, confit and tenderloin, each outstanding on its own but powerful as a combination – excellent! Yukon Arctic Char with potato pureé, baby green beans, crispy leeks, BC chanterelle mushrooms and saffron beurre blanc, was light, flaky and perfectly done.
The service was perfectly timed, not rushed, but not too extended. The wait staff were professional and friendly, always there when needed, but not hovering. If you are looking for fine dining while in the wonderful village of Whistler, I would highly recommend a visit to Araxi.
