It’s officially time to get out the slow cooker and start into a season of tummy-warming soups!
This was the first week in Toronto that had a bit of a ‘nip’ in the air. The cooler night time temps finally got the leaves changing, so it really feels like fall now. That cue gives me permission to cosy-up with some hearty comfort foods – not that I need permission, as I love them all year ’round! A great way to start up the slow cooker season is with soup, so this Slow Cooker French Canadian Onion Soup is the first of 3 great soup ideas that will follow over the coming days.
Ahhh French Onion Soup, it’s a classic, right? I love it because one, it tastes amazing and two, it’s really simple. Not to mention it costs just pennies and makes a huge batch that feeds a crowd. This Slow Cooker French Canadian Onion Soup has a bit of a Canadian twist… you guessed it… maple syrup!
I love the slow cooker! Last fall and winter I made lots of my favourites, the most popular being Slow Cooker General Tsos Chicken, Slow Cooker Mongolian Beef and even Slow Cooker S’more Cake. The best part about this recipe is you can pop simple ingredients in the cooker in the morning, and come back in the evening to delicious homemade soup.
One of the tastiest parts of any French Onion Soup is the garnish… I love the bread topping and lots of stringy, gooey Gruyere cheese. So delicious. Enjoy!

Lori,
I like to cook with my slow cookers. I also like to make and eat homemade soups. I’m sure happy I discovered your blog with the soups posts.
