Spreading the word for the gluten-free community

Did you know that May is Celiac Awareness Month in Canada and the United States? I’m helping spread the word by telling you all about a great gluten-free event here in Toronto, and sharing a recipe… dah.
First what is gluten? Gluten is a protein found in grains such as barley, wheat and rye. Consumption of gluten can affect the whole body. What is Celiac? Celiac disease is a genetic autoimmune disease which damages the small intestine. The small intestine is part of the gut which digests & absorbs nutrients from food. When the small intestine is damaged, the rate of nutrient absorption from food is reduced. Celiac disease can affect people in many different ways and symptoms vary in severity. Treatment for celiac disease and gluten intolerance is straight forward; those affected are advised to avoid foods which contains gluten. That’s where the never-ending search for delicious gluten-free food begins.
Look no further than the 6th edition of Toronto’s gluten-free marketplace GLUTEN FREE GARAGE, returning to Artscape Wychwood Barns in Toronto on Sunday May 28, 2017.
Toronto’s highly anticipated go-to gluten-free event is a prominent playground for gluten-free people who are always looking to discover new brands, try different foods and meet fellow foodies. Carefully curated for people with celiac disease and gluten intolerance, GLUTEN FREE GARAGE places quality and taste at the forefront, allowing it to be experienced by all food lovers as the perfect, most delicious way to celebrate CELIAC AWARENESS MONTH.
More than 60 handpicked vendors (most of which are local and artisanal) will be offering attendees a wide variety of gluten-free options appealing to different tastes. Indulge in freshly baked goods, like bagels, scones and baguettes, that you never thought could taste so good. Enjoy savoury made-to-order foods, like falafel, tacos and dumplings, for lunch. Sample and purchase sweet and savoury snacks, sauces, soups, pizza, pasta, gelato and even skincare! Not just for people with celiac disease, Gluten-Free Garage offers something for everyone on the gluten-free spectrum- meat eaters and vegans alike.
In addition to the plentiful food and beverage options at Gluten Free Garage, attendees will also have the opportunity to hear from industry influencers and experts at GFG’s speaker panels. This year’s special guests include North America’s leading gluten-free expert, nutritionist and cookbook author Kathy Smart, who will reveal “The Top 5 Gluten-Free Foods You Haven’t Heard About (and Why You Need to Eat Them)”; Yorkville Health Clinic’s Dr. Katherine Kremblewski, ND, who will teach you to “Love Your MicroBiome: The Importance of Digestion in Optimizing your Health”; and 11-year-old Lily Eklove, GFG muse and daughter of festival founder RonniLyn Pustil, who will share her “Lessons I’ve Learned from Being Gluten Free” and cohost a Cupcake Decorating Extravaganza with Almond Butterfly Bake Shop.
